Snowmaking and good grooming can change a good day on the slopes into a really great day. Snowmaking is an art and special science. Our mountain staff collectively, has over 100 years of snowmaking, grooming and lift experience. Our guests frequently remark how much they appreciate our snow conditions as they relate to the weather conditions. We have every possible advantage in making good snow conditions. The Little Maquoketa River has near freezing water all winter. The water has minute silt particles needed to form snowflakes. Sundown uses a natural snow enhancing additive that makes more and dryer designer snow with more than 150 guns and poles. Most of the trails are shaded by large cedar trees most of the day that reduce slick or ice conditions found on sunny slopes. We are not near large expanses of open water that can increase humidity which makes wet snow that dries hard. Our state of the art groomers produce smooth corduroy slopes.
Notice: Trails or parts of trails may be temporarily closed at any time for your safety or until the mountain is 100% open. Chairlifts may be closed when lightning or high crosswinds are expected.
As of today Asbury Road westbound from Dubuque is open all the way to Sundown.
County Road Y21 from the South is also open to Sundown.
